Airway Management - Case Reports and Feedback - Joe David Pierce, CRNA

Dear Clarus Medical:

I am writing to thank you for manufacturing a product so helpful to my practice. I am a solo CRNA in an office plastics practice. Prior to my obtaining a SOS rigid intubating stylet, I had to always practice with the apprehension of inducing a patient that I could not intubate or ventilate. I have always had a jet-ventilation system and a cricothyrotomy kit on hand, as well as a Combitube available. However, now that I have and use the SOS rigid fiberoptic scope, I expect never to use these. I have had geriatric face-lift patients, difficult at the onset of surgery to intubate, that required emergent re-intubation after extubation because of hematoma formation nearly compromising the airway. Yet the SOS allowed rapid and direct visualization of the airway and reintubation. Before including your SOS in my practice equipment, I've had to cancel surgeries on cosmetic patients because of difficulty in attempting intubation, and wanting to avoid heroic attempts on elective cases. Since it's arrival, I've had no patient I could not comfortably intubate.
Of course, it's an aid to airway management, and no panacea. I am delighted to have an instrument that is so dependable and easy to use.

Thanks,

Joe David Pierce, CRNA
